U nedostatku semenskog krompira, mogu se posejati i krupne krtole namenjene konzmu (za jelo). U tom slučaju krupne krtole koje dostižu veličinu od 60 milimetara i težinu od sto grama se seku na dva-tri dela.
Za sadnju optimalni prečnik isečenih delova krtola je 28-55 milimetara, a težina 50-80 grama.
Pažnju treba obratiti na raspored okaca, tako da na svakom isečenom delu ostanu najmanje dve ili tri dobro razvijene klice. Krtole ne treba saditi odmah posle sečenja, već ostaviti nekoliko dana na 14-18 stepeni, pri vlažnosti vazduha 90-95 odsto i na dnevnoj svetlosti. U tom slučaju na sečenom delu se hvata pokorica i smanjena je mogućnost infekcije.
Pre sečenja treba dezinfikovati alat dvoprocentnim rastvorom formalina. Tako će se sprečiti širenje gljivičnih bolesti poput raka krompira, bele noge, plamenjače, prašne krastavosti, gangrene. Onemogućava se i razvoj obične krastavosti i crne noge, koje izazivaju bakterije, kao i brojnih viroza.
Ako se u toku skladištenja sečenih krtola pojavi neki od ovih uzročnika bolesti pre sadnje, potrebno je upotrebiti preparate na bazi cineba ili mankozeba.
I još jedan savet, ako vam je u ostavi krompir smežurao i proklijao, on se ne preporučuje za jelo, ali se može posejati u bašti. Tom prilikom se ne odstranjuju iznikle klice, jer tako mlade biljke krompira brže niču.
